That is at least a nine hour drive sometimes longer. It is 440 miles between Las Vegas and Reno. I don't know if people are telling you what you need to know. If you past Las Vegas and it gets late is there motels to stay in or places to eat? What is between Las Vegas and Reno? Are there plenty of gas stations, motels and eating places? It looks like about 7 or 8 hours between the cities and it looks pretty barren on the map for towns. to Reno, Nevada in the first part of Oct. We are driving round trip with stops from N.C. If you get stuck there the El Capitan is ok. Hawthorne does not have a whole lot to recommend it. Walking around the backstreets west of 95 is very interesting, tiny homes dating from the mining rush.
There are reasonable motels in Tonopah, and a great Mexican restaurant. Leave Las Vegas in the morning for an all day drive. I like the drive, the long distance views, the mountains, Walker Lake is beautiful. The town is heated by a central furnace.įallon is a real town, with food, and a selection of motels. It was once a huge ammunition manufacturing center, the bunkers line the valley for miles. Great history if you are into it, stop at the mining museum. Tonopah is a good place to get gas and eat, McDonalds or the Station House is about it. Goldfield is worth driving around a few blocks (that is all there is) it was a thriving town 100 years ago.
